The Practice Leak Assessment

Before You Go Looking for More Tax Clients, Take a Look at the Practice You Already Have.

You worked hard to build your tax business.

One client at a time. One referral at a time. One tax season at a time.

But when the season gets busy, we're focused on getting returns done.

We don't always stop to look at what the business is costing us, which clients aren't coming back, which leads never got followed up with, or how much opportunity may already be sitting inside the practice.

That's what the Practice Leak Assessment helps you see.

Find out where money and opportunity may be slipping through your tax practice.

Use your actual numbers. Get your personalized results.

What season hides

Tax Season Has a Way of Hiding Things.

You get through another season.

The returns got filed. Clients got their refunds. You made some money.

Then you start getting ready to do it all over again.

Renew the software.

Set up the bank products.

Try to get more clients.

Maybe spend some money on marketing.

And somewhere in all of that, we don't always stop and ask:

What happened to the money and opportunities that were already inside the business?

  • The client who came last year but didn't come back.
  • The phone call nobody answered.
  • The lead you meant to follow up with.
  • The old clients sitting in your database.
  • The referrals you know you could be getting more of.
  • The software and bank-product costs you've been paying because that's just what you've always paid.

None of those things by themselves may feel like a big deal.

But put them together and you may be looking at a very different business.

That's what I call Practice Leaks.

Why I built this

I Started Looking at This in My Own Practice.

I've been in this business for more than 20 years.

And I'm not going to sit here and tell you I've done everything right.

I haven't.

I've had clients we should've followed up with.

Relationships we could've done more with.

Systems we should've put in place sooner.

Money we spent without stopping to ask whether there was a better way.

And plenty of things we knew we should be doing but weren't doing consistently.

That's actually what got me thinking about Practice Leaks.

Before I tell another tax pro they need more clients, more marketing or another piece of software, maybe we should first look at the business they've already built.

So that's what this assessment does.

What it looks at

Where Is Your Practice Leaking?

The assessment looks at three areas.

01

Money You May Be Overpaying

  • Your tax software.
  • Your bank-product economics.
  • Tools and other costs around running the practice.

Not because cheaper is automatically better. We just want to know what you're paying and what you're getting for it.

02

Money That May Be Walking Out

  • Clients who don't return.
  • Calls that don't get answered.
  • Leads that don't get followed up with.

You can work hard getting people through the door and still lose business simply because there wasn't a system to catch what came in.

03

Money Already Within Reach

  • Past clients.
  • Your existing database.
  • Referrals.
  • Additional services.
  • Relationships you've spent years building.

Sometimes we're so busy trying to find the next client that we don't see what's already sitting right in front of us.

These are the same areas your personalized results will help you examine.

Straight talk

This Isn't a Promise That There's $50,000 Hiding Somewhere.

I want to be clear about that.

The assessment uses your answers to help you look at what may be happening inside your practice.

Some things can be tied to real numbers, like what you're currently paying for software.

Other things are opportunities.

If 100 past clients haven't heard from you in two years, that doesn't mean they're all coming back.

If you're not consistently asking for referrals, that doesn't mean somebody can promise how many referrals you'll get.

But those things are still worth seeing.

The point isn't to give you a big number and pretend it's money in the bank.

The point is to help you see your practice more clearly so you can decide what's actually worth your attention.

Before you assume the answer is more clients

You Already Did the Hard Part.

You built the practice. You earned the clients. You built relationships.

You survived tax seasons that probably made you question why you got into this business in the first place.

Before you assume the answer is more clients, let's take a look at what you already have.

Take the Practice Leak Assessment.Use your real numbers.See what comes back. Then decide what deserves your attention.
